IEC 62133-2:2017 Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery Testing Standard and Application Areas

2026-07-01

Standard Basic Definition and Positioning:

1.IEC 62133-2:2017 is a mandatory safety testing standard for portable sealed lithium-ion secondary batteries officially released by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 2017. Its full name is "Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary batteries containing alkaline or other non-acidic electrolytes – Part 2: Lithium systems" (IEC Webstore). This standard is derived from the older version IEC 62133:2017. IEC 62133-1:2017 is applicable to nickel-metal hydride and nickel-cadmium batteries, while IEC 62133-2:2017 is specifically for lithium-ion and lithium polymer (Li-Po) cells and battery packs.

2.The core purpose of the standard is to verify that lithium polymer batteries, under normal use, foreseeable misuse, transportation disturbances, and extreme temperature changes, eliminate the risks of fire, explosion, leakage, and thermal runaway, covering both individual cell and finished battery pack safety management.

Main Application Areas:

IEC62133-2:2017 strictly adapts to portable sealed lithium polymer batteries, excluding stationary energy storage, acidic electrolyte batteries, and disposable lithium batteries. The main application areas covered in this test report are:

IT Digital Devices: Lithium polymer batteries for laptops, tablets, wireless keyboards and mice, power banks, Bluetooth headsets, and portable industrial control terminals;

Power Tools: Lithium-ion drills, angle grinders, garden trimmers, and power lithium-ion batteries for handheld vacuum cleaners;

Laboratory Instruments: Portable testing instruments, portable analytical devices, and batteries for field sampling and measuring instruments;

Home Consumer Electronics: Smart home devices, portable small appliances, wearable health devices, and wireless home accessories;

Medical Equipment: Portable monitors, mobile rehabilitation equipment, and handheld diagnostic devices (for high-safety-level, essential applications).

Main Mandatory Test Items:

1.Individual Cell Testing

External Short Circuit Test: Low-resistance short circuit in dual environments of room temperature and 55℃, requiring no fire or explosion within 7 days, and surface temperature ≤150℃;

Overcharge Test: Continuous charging at 2 times the rated voltage for 24 hours to verify the cell's overvoltage tolerance;

Thermal Abuse Test: Uniformly heating to 130℃ and holding for 10 minutes to assess thermal runaway resistance;

Forced Discharge and Long-Term Low-Voltage Charging: Simulating extreme conditions of depleted battery and charging with a substandard charger.

Finished Battery Pack with PCM Testing:

Free Fall Test: Three six-sided drops from a 1-meter height onto a concrete surface; no damage or fire observed in the casing or circuitry.

Vibration + Mechanical Shock Test: Replicating the bumpy conditions of sea and land transportation; structural stability and protection circuitry function remained intact.

BMS Protection Effectiveness Verification: Overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, and temperature control protection triggering complies with regulations.

High Temperature Storage Test: Long-term constant temperature storage at 70℃; no bulging, leakage, or excessive performance degradation observed.
